Downtown Houma Historic Building Lighting Project

Thanks to generous community support and donations raised at the Bayou Terrebonne Boucherie, the Hache Grant Association successfully completed the lighting of a historic building in the heart of downtown Houma. This project enhances the visibility, safety, and beauty of one of Houma’s treasured structures, contributing to the continued revitalization of the downtown district.

While HGA remains committed to its long-term vision of developing the Bayou Terrebonne Paddle Trail, this project reflects its broader mission to reinvest in the community and bring new energy to downtown spaces. Improvements like these help create a more vibrant, welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

This project was made possible with the valued partnership and support of Valley Supply, whose contribution helped turn this vision into reality. Together, these efforts demonstrate the power of community collaboration and the meaningful impact that local investment can have on preserving and enhancing Houma’s unique character.

Initiatives

The Bayou Terrebonne Paddle Trail

The HGA is continuing its "Start at the Heart" revitalization campaign with a focus on a main artery of our town, Bayou Terrebonne. Many downtowns have historic buildings and nice scenery, but few are lucky enough to have a natural waterway running alongside Main Street like we do in Houma. We believe it's time to leverage, maintain and develop that God-given asset in another effort to enhance the quality of life in our town.

The funds raised from the Annual Bayou Terrebonne Boucherie will support efforts to construct the first paddle launch trailhead. The project mockup was created by Kassie Matherne. Future phases will continue to expand paddle trailheads along the Bayou Terrebonne Paddle Trail, creating the first project of its kind in Terrebonne Parish.

This initiative will provide residents and visitors with unprecedented access to the bayou through a series of floating docks and launch points beginning in Downtown Houma. By building the first floating launch in Houma, the project will promote healthy outdoor recreation in a way that is unique to our region while also supporting the preservation and appreciation of Bayou Terrebonne, the main artery of our community.

Houma Courthouse Square Bandstand

The Houma Courthouse Square Bandstand was completed In October 2022 and was dedicated to the Terrebonne Parish’s Bicentennial Celebration!

This structure is truly one that was built for the community by the community. There are countless people who have donated their time, money and effort to give the whole town a beautiful public amenity to enjoy. The band stand helps celebrate our unique culture and is the center of celebration of downtown events at the court house square.

This project could have not have been completed without the steadfast dedication and expertise of architect Merlin Lirette of The Merlin Group, Ltd. and contractor Allen Porche Jr. of Gulf Coast Contracting Services, Inc., along with the cooperation of the Houma Downtown Development Corporation and the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government.

We thank you Houma for supporting us in this endeavor. Lache Pas La Patate!
